{Saturday Coffee & Net Talk}

Good morning to a very special Saturday coffee! Not only is there a fresh cup of coffee here today, but right next to it you'll also find a proper birthday cake and beautifully wrapped parcels. Why, you ask? I'm happy to tell you: The Maschenfein boss is celebrating (a half-round) birthday and this is being celebrated properly.

Of course, Marisa will be unwrapping her presents in peace and quiet at home, but I want to open one of them with you right now. Because it's a piece of Maschenfein history. Because, believe it or not, our store and blog are also celebrating an anniversary this year: Maschenfein will be ten years old in September. Of course, we'll think of something else in due course, but you can already enjoy a little anniversary flair today ... Make yourselves really comfortable, have fun reading!

Who remembers?

Strictly speaking, the beginnings of Maschenfein go back to Marisa's childhood, when she learned to knit from her grandma Lotti, but an important milestone on the way to the online store that we are today was definitely the first scarf book.

You - and we! - the Hinata cover shawl back then. Since 2019, it has been knitted countless times in a wide variety of yarn combinations. We have three different kits in our store.

One would have to ...

But for a long time, Marisa had an idea in her head: how about reissuing Hinata as a small cloth? I can tell you: the topic came up often, but there were always other projects and the idea faded into the background again.

This went on for a few weeks until Sandra happened to look at the calendar. That's when it clicked: Why not give Marisa a mini version of the Hinata shawl with matching pattern for her birthday? The idea was there and had taken root. So Sandra knitted away.

Anyone who has been following Maschenfein for a while will know it: Hinata, the cover of our first cloth book.

Try, try, try

The first question was, of course, which yarn to use. We didn't have to think long: one of the first yarn manufacturers to come to us was Lamana with its Como quality. The fact that another Como version was coming out this year was more than just a hint of fate: Como Cashmere it will be - we felt that immediately!

But it was also clear that simply knitting a smaller Hinata was not enough. Without conversions and the odd adjustment, it wouldn't have had the right shape. So Sandra fiddled around and after a few attempts everything fitted.

Today is your birthday: unwrap your present now!

Of course, we wouldn't be Maschenfein if we didn't overcome one or two hurdles during a special campaign. Those in the know may remember the famous Verena shawl and the matching Bayak yarn (now discontinued), which sold like hot cakes. This was followed by a desperate call to Paul Pascuali, who then brought supplies himself in a suitcase from South America.

And so it only took us a few deep breaths when we learned that the delivery of Como Cashmere to Lamana had been delayed. That's how it is: we've all known about the sensitivity of supply chains since Corona at the latest! Fortunately, the other new quality had already arrived - and here's some important information for you: You can also knit the Mininata from Roma!

So when Marisa opens her lovingly packed parcel, she will find a mininata knitted by Sandra from Roma. Another one in Como Cashmere is in the works and the entire Maschenfein team also has one on the needles.

Everything about knitting

Mininata
Starting at the bottom: Mininata.

Like its big sister, you knit the mininata from the bottom tip to the long side. The pattern is created using slip stitches and is therefore also suitable for advanced beginners. And the great thing is that you can knit it in many qualities in addition to Como Cashmere and Roma. The team also had Milano on the needles, for example. Premia (double) also works and good old Como gives the shawl the right cuddle factor.

You always need one ball of yarn per color (for the double thread Premia you simply knit the ball from two sides). For this reason, we don't create a kit for all yarns - you'll end up overwhelmed by the choice! Our favorites remain Roma and Como Cashmere - but there are no limits to your imagination. Just keep in mind that the shawl lives from its lightness. Robust, heavy yarns would completely change its look and feel. And the good news at the very end: Lamana sent us the already available colors of Como Cashmere in a rush. These are already in stock. The remaining colors will arrive next week. So you can already get your hands on them! As usual, the pattern are also available separately from us.

More new products from Lamana

Of course, I have brought you even more knitting ideas for this Saturday coffee. In addition to its two new yarns, Lamana has also been working on a magazine for spring and summer. In it you will find eight patterns for the warm season. The qualities Verona, Modena, Ica, Cosma, Perla and Lima are knitted. I haven't had all of them on my needles yet. For example, it's high time for the combination of Verona and Modena for the Andrea shirt - my personal favorite from the magazine!

More knitting ideas for the birthday boy or girl

Another Lamana yarn combination in this chic, spring-like style: the Krogenn cardigan by Nadine Joerg Fauvel aka Madame Fauvel knits is an elegant design with a round neckline.

Two strands are knitted from the top down with Lima and Premia from Lamana. The lace sections are shown as a diagram in the pattern, and if you like, you can also adjust the raglan increases. This allows you to modify the shape slightly and tailor it even better to your own body shape.

Sunshine means shirt time!

After last week's banging weather days, I've pretty much arrived in my spring wardrobe myself (which in turn was avenged a few days later with gusts of wind and drizzle, but so be it). Browsing through our kits of shirts and tops has moved way, way up my priority list and unfortunately, unfortunately, window cleaning has taken a back seat. But I see this simply as species protection. When the windows are clean, the birds fly against them too easily, so it's better to put it off a little longer!

In addition to my commitment to the animal world, the whole thing is of course also a commitment to my knitting well-being. And for yours! Take a look at the designs shown above! The Plain Yoke Tee 20 Solo by Lene Holme Samsøe and the Pimentón shirt by Claudia Eisenkolb are new additions to the store. Both are knitted from the top down in the round. As in the original, the tee is worked with Line from Sandnes, while Claudia Eisenkolb's model is worked with Nepal from Pascuali. A tip at this point: there is a very fresh portrait of Claudia and her work as a designer on the blog. Here you can find out how Claudia came to focus on custom-fit knitwear.

The Sailor Swift Top by Veronika Lindberg has been available from us as a kit since last summer, but has not yet been shown in Saturday Coffee. And here's some good news: the pattern are now also available in German! So nothing stands in the way of knitting a top from the top down in Manadarin Petit from Sandnes! Or also: Don't shake it off!

New at Maschenfein

In addition to the two Lamana additions Roma and Como Cashmere, three more yarns have moved into our store. You can now find Skadi Merino d'Arles, Mokosh Merino d'Arles and Ylva in our shop. All three are from Hey Mama Wolf, a label whose founder Jule you may already know.

Ever since Jule, who once studied surface and textile design, founded her brand, she has paid attention to animal welfare and environmental protection in her production. The raw material for all three qualities comes from Europe: the wool for Skadi and Mokosh is from sheep from the south of France and the French Alps, the wool for Ylva from northern and eastern Germany. While the first two are very soft, the latter is more robust and rustic. As is so often the case, both have their advantages - it all depends on the planned project. Feel free to ask us any questions, we will take care of the stitch samples in the meantime. By the way: the wool is also processed entirely in Europe.

Maschenfein knitting round on a birthday

What does a perfect birthday look like for you? For me, it can be an extensive round on the knitting needles. As always, you can find ideas for new projects in our knitting group. And who knows - maybe I'll discover the first mini Atas in the next few weeks! But here's what I did today:

Jule shows her Holger sweater from PetiteKnit made from Double Sunday by Sandnes. I was already able to admire the finished piece on my godchild. Too cute, I tell you!

Melanie knits a Bellblouse Chunky Kids by Kleinigkeitenliebe from Merry Merino 110 by Kremke. You really must take a look at this design series! I'm thinking of knitting one for my daughter and one for myself. Maybe she'll be 15 by then, who knows!

And of course there are also examples of our Mother's Day shawl Lotti from Pinta by Pascuali. Here you can see the projects by Sandra and Katharina (who recently joined our design team!). By the way, you've managed to clear out almost all the pinta stocks. Of course, that makes us really happy! We've announced that we'll be restocking the colors at the beginning/mid-May. But there are still some leftovers. So if you still want to knit: now is the time!

As you can see, there's lots to browse through again at Maschenfein. I hope you enjoy our site and wish our birthday girl a happy birthday once again! Have a wonderful weekend with lots of cake and knitting time!
