Hello and welcome to Saturday Coffee! We start today with a little riddle: What do the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria, the cartoon cat Garfield and the German women's national soccer team have to do with each other?

Well, does anyone have an idea? Here's the solution: Tomorrow, June 19, is an important day for all three. In 1978, the first comic strip featuring Garfield the orange furry tiger was published on this date. On June 19, 2005, the German women's soccer team celebrates its sixth European championship title after a 3:1 victory over Norway. In 2010, Victoria, the future queen of Sweden, marries her former fitness coach Daniel Westling in Stockholm; incidentally, on exactly the same date as her parents said "I do" in 1976.

And what does all this have to do with knitting? Pleasingly little. Fortunately, we don't need a special occasion to enjoy knitting, the rattling of needles and the like. As we all know, knitting can always be done: in between jobs, at the end of the day, or on hot Sundays like tomorrow, June 19.

Enjoy our knitting inspirations and have a great start to the weekend!

Small ribbons, big love - summertime is carrier top time

It just doesn't stop: The enthusiasm for tank tops is currently dancing happily through social media timelines and provides a supply of ideas on Ravelry. Of course, no one will be surprised: Most of the pieces are knitted quickly and they do not take up much space in your luggage - no matter if they are ready to wear or still on the needles.

The beginning of our small carrier top round makes Dagny from the design duo Sistaknit, two sisters from Stavanger, Norway. Super cute is not only the dog in the picture, but also the top. Through the pattern mix comes enough variety on the needles, at the same time you have - once you have the different sets in mind - also do not have to have the knitting chart in front of your nose all the time. The German pattern are available for download on the sisters' website.

As a yarn recommendation we have for you Cosma from LAMANA. Attentive Samstagskaffee readers will have noticed that this yarn is appearing more often at the moment: The cotton-modal blend is simply a perfect summer yarn that is also easy to care for. If you like to work linen into your summer knits, you could reach for Allino from BC GARN.

T01 is the name of the next tank top and the minimalist name reflects the clean design: no frills, clean lines. Features that are always high in the Maschenfein family.

Berlin-based designer Pia Elverich 's top is inspired by graphic Scandinavian style, just like her other designs. While the front neckline runs in a soft V, the back is designed with a relatively low-set round neckline. Pia has taken up the theme of "slow fashion". Not so slow at all, however, you should probably get on with the catchy ribbed pattern of the T01.
When asked about the best yarn, Jule immediately went into raptures and had quite a few suggestions. (My secret plan of revenge for all the great inspirations of the last years, which I always wanted to knit after all: Tempt one member of the Maschenfein team per Saturday coffee to a new UFO project. I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it...)

If you want it to be basic - and this design really offers that - you can get the Mandarin Petit. The pure cotton yarn from SANDNES GARN is available in many pastel shades, but also in some strong tones. An exciting mixture offers Pinta from PASCUALI: a beautiful 4-thread yarn made of 60% merino, 20% silk and 20% ramie. The plant fiber ramie provides good moisture absorption, the silk content for a light sheen. For this variant we have packed a knitting kit in the store.
To make your decision even harder to offer even more choice: Jaipur Silk Fino by BC GARN is a pure silk yarn in bright colors, which give this design an extra portion of eye-catching potential.

Anything but off the roll: film tutorial in summer knitting

I assume that most of you are wool-crazy and in love with knitting, if you sweeten the start of the weekend with our Saturday coffee. Some of you may have just started knitting, or you may have friends you'd like to share your passion for our wonderful hobby with. For all these cases, the next top is the perfect model.

Designer Kika (Veronika Lindberg in the non-digital world) lives in Helsinki and started posting her knits on Instagram five years ago as Kutovakika. In 2019, her first video went online on YouTube. Since then, she has been sharing her favorite sweaters (mostly from Scandinavian designers like PetiteKnit or My Favourite Things), some knitting accidents, her favorite techniques and much more.

With How to Knit a Summer Tank Top has a complete video tutorial for her latest design online since a few days. She explains step by step how to knit her Oh La La Top is knitted. Yarn of her choice and also perfect for knitting newbies: Mandarin Petit From SANDNES GARN.

Kika's pattern and videos are all in English. Such a simple project would be a great introduction to the world of knitinstructionsttern in foreign languages for those who have not yet dared to do so. Believe me: It's worth it! And for a quick look in between, we recommend the Maschenfein cheat sheet on English knitting terms, which you can download for free in the store. (You have to "buy" it officially via the shopping cart, but the price is 0 Euro).

Looking for your next project? We help you

You do not know yet exactly which summer top could be the right one for you and want even more choice? You will now find a separate inspiration for summer tops on our website. Feel free to take a look.

Who wants to go on a discovery tour themselves: If you click on knitting kits in the store, you have the option of using the filter function to search specifically for tops. But be careful - you might find your next two to eighteen knitting projects there unintentionally. Here is a small sample.

Her latest design, the Pure T, by the way, designer ChrisBerlin recently presented in detail with Marisa on Instagram. You can find the informative, but also really very funny story in her highlights.

"If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it..."

This is probably a generational thing now, but maybe some of you always have to think of this song line from "Wear Sunscreen" by Buz Luhrmann from 1999 when you think of sun protection. The lyrics are a kind of prom speech, proclaiming life wisdom - UV protection being at the top of the list. Sounds strange, but we thought it was really great when we were teenagers.

The next two shirt designs are quite practical for those who - like me - have to take care of their skin anyway: they bring a bit more fabric, but are still absolutely suitable for summer.

Staple Linen Top Photo: © Joji Locatelli

Joji Locatelli is a real happy-go-lucky person, if you look at her Instagram profile. The designer is on the go a lot - whether in the city with friends or on extended hiking vacations with her family. There is no shortage of pretty knitwear suitable for everyday use, even in summer. Your Staple Linen Top is relatively high closed, but overall very airy - not least thanks to the pattern on the front. Knit the transparent summer top top down in rounds.

For the Staple Linen you will find a practical knitting kit in the store with Sparrow from QUINCE&CO, a fine 100% organic linen in a beautiful variety of colors. Don't be fooled by the rather firm feel when knitting: After washing and when worn, the knit becomes pleasantly soft.

Our next suggestion is called Tamina and goes more in the direction of a T-shirt. However, the sleeves are so short that in terms of airiness there is certainly still no reason to worry or sweat. Designer Kristin, who can be found on Instagram as joel_joel_handmade_4friends, offers two versions of her Tamina: quite plain, so that the lace pattern at the cuffs and the raglan slopes comes into its own particularly well.

Or you can opt for the "highlight variant" with a fancy eye-catcher directly under the neckline. Here, an additional lace pattern element is incorporated, which reminds me a bit of a bow tie or suit bow tie. Both variants differ in the construction - so top down in rounds - but of course not.

I find the yarn choice particularly exciting. Kristin recommends Summer in Kashmir from BC GARN. Thanks to the high cotton content (90%), it's the perfect summer yarn and, fortunately, it's also GOTS certified. The admixture of 10% cashmere gives the knitted piece a light, noble sheen and makes it especially soft - without being "hairy" at all. 100% skin-flattering, I only say.

Net whisper and maschenfein knitting round

I'm taking advantage of the net whisper today for a bonus model. The tutorial is so new that my design list for this Saturday Coffee was already full when it appeared. The Montpellier Top by Novemberknits I don't want to withhold from you - especially since it is already available in German translation so shortly after its release. The design is knit from the top down and owes its structure to the decorative ribbing on the sides. The most exciting part, however, in my opinion, is the yarn choice: Tykk Line I've been wanting to knit from SANDNES GARN for quite a while, but so far I've been missing the summery, yet sturdy model for it. Thanks to the weight of the yarn, Montpellier is a quick-knit top for in-between, and I'm reminded of the stitchy wisdom, "It doesn't count as a project if it doesn't have sleeves..."

And another short look at the knitting round: One could become envious with the wonderful vacation pictures of Sandra. If you want to get the vacation longing on your needles, you might want to try Stole Frieda in this dreamlike Greece-blue (in the color card as blue hydrangea to find) a knitting destination is. Lisa is looking forward to a new beginning. Her gauge for the Camisole No. 5 of My Favourite Things from Merino from KNITTING FOR OLIVE is ready and the knitting fun can begin - but please don't pick at the cactus.

I hope these ideas will help you get through a very hot weekend, according to the weather forecast. Fortunately, knitting in the shade with a cool drink is wonderful (and too much exercise is unhealthy in this heat anyway). In this sense: Keep it cool.

Dear knitters,
I have the beautiful Pure t on my needles right now. What does " ssp" mean?
Can someone please help me out?
Unfortunately, it is not listed in the legend.
Many thanks
Ute

Judith

Dear Ute, ssp stands for "slip, slip, purl" and means: "slip two stitches one after the other as if knitting right, back to the left needle and knit them together interlocked left." So it is a way of decreasing stitches. For English abbreviations, the Maschenfein translation chart is totally helpful. It's available for free download here: https://www.maschenfein.com/produkt/englische-strickbegriffe-tabelle/
Happy "slipping", Judith

Lara

Great, Judith. Thank you so much!!! 🤣

Lara

I didn't want inspiration, as I'm bravely trying my hand at my first Fair Isle Cardigan. And it still needs it. But with the current temperatures, it practically screams for a new top. And here I found two! So it will be nix with the cardigan 😄

Judith

Well, Lara, why should only I become a victim of my own suggestions ;-p That happens to me regularly. Have fun with the tops - I will now also soon hit, if I have decided.
