Istex - Léttlopi

Made from pure wool from Icelandic sheep, Istex yarns have unusual but also very special characteristics. The fleece of Icelandic sheep is known as a "dual coat". This fleece consists of longer and stronger outer hairs and very soft and airy fibers in the undercoat. The top coat protects the sheep from moisture and wind, while the undercoat keeps the sheep warm.
Léttlopi is the thinner version of Álafosslopi and has the same characteristics. This yarn also contains both types of fibers of the "double-coated" fleece, which preserves the wind and water-repellent characteristics as well as the heat storage in the yarn. This naturally makes the yarn more robust and rougher and cannot be compared with a merino quality.
Léttlopi is also suitable for knitwear that is worn indoors or in spring and fall, as it is only about half as heavy.

Responsibility

Istex meets the high standards of Icelandic animal husbandry legislation. The use of antibiotics, hormones, herbicides, pesticides and chemical treatments is severely restricted and strictly controlled. In addition, the sheep are not unnecessarily milked or dehorned.
Shearing is usually carried out under the watchful eye of the sheep farmers to ensure the welfare of the valuable animals. Immediately after shearing, the sheep are brought into the barn. They are given a nice, warm coat of wool before they are allowed outside again.
