{Saturday Coffee & Net Talk}

It's that time of year again... what is she talking about? Well, the Maschenfein Mother's Day shawl is here! For the seventh time, we're releasing our own shawl design to mark Mother's Day and today you'll find out everything you need to know about the latest Maschenfein design addition.

I wish you a wonderful good morning for your Saturday coffee! I'll admit it: This year we have once again gone to great lengths to arouse your curiosity. Today is your reward! Make yourselves comfortable and enjoy reading!

A warm welcome to ...

... Mother's Day shawl Romy! We've been looking forward to this week so much that we can show you our latest design. And even though it's the seventh, every Mother's Day shawl is something very special for us.

Romy is everything we love so much at Maschenfein. A shawl, of course, but also classic and yet somehow modern. It combines different techniques, but is also something for advanced beginners. Will expert knitters get bored? We think not! On the contrary: Romy will be a great companion - when knitting and when wearing.

Romy is knitted in stockinette stitch from one tip to the other. But you are guaranteed not to get bored: you mark stitches for a total of three crochet cables. You drop these stitches in the decrease section and then crochet them back up as slip stitches. Finally, Romy has an edge made of slip stitches to round off the design.

For our samplers, we chose Como Cashmere yarn from Lamana, a soft and cozy merino yarn with a cashmere content of 30%. The fine fiber provides a silky sheen. Thanks to the generous yardage, the shawl also remains nice and light. Our colors are Cherry Blossom (72), Wool White (00), Silk Grey (03) and Sage (64). You have already thoroughly cleaned out a few of them, but supplies are on the way - just note the slightly longer delivery time.

Alternatively, you can also knit Romy in Como: Both yarns differ only in their composition, but otherwise have the same characteristics. You will also achieve a great result with the pure merino yarn.

Everything about the Knit-Along

As tradition would have it - and so would we all! - there will also be a knit-along for this Mother's Day shawl. This means that we will all knit Romy together. The starting date is April 11.

When you purchase the set or the individual pattern, you will initially only receive the cover page of the pattern and the most important information such as needle size and gauge. You will then receive the complete PDF via an update in your customer account, as an email or on Ravelry. You don't have to do anything else at this point, except be patient on April 11th, as we will be sending the mails in bulks due to the large number.

From then on, the knitting starts. The official end is Mother's Day on May 11. But as someone who only finished last year's Mother's Day shawl a few days ago, I can say with a clear conscience: don't stress. Everyone knits at their own pace - after all, our hobby is not a competition. 😉 The important thing is that you enjoy it. The fact that you get a free ribbon and a card to print out with the pattern will also give you a few feelings of happiness. If you'd like something a little more elegant, you can find our Maschenfein greetings cards on high-quality recycled paper here.

More good news

Anyone who has read this week's newsletter will also know that the summer yarn Perla from Lamana is back in stock in all colors. So nothing stands in the way of a (further) Maschenfein Perla cardigan.

I'm so looking forward to when it gets a bit warmer and I can wear my rose quartz version again. I'm still itching for anthracite. And how beautiful does the Mollimi mini shawl from our book Mini Tücher - Maxi Chic look with it?

I also have something to get off my chest: Our third little scarf book has officially been a bestseller since yesterday and is in 2nd place in the corresponding section of the SPIEGEL. This is only possible because you have been so enthusiastic about Mini Tücher - Maxi Chic. Many, many thanks!

New in the store

Of course, I've also brought you a few new items from the store. It was particularly difficult for me to choose this week - there are just so many great new sets.

The My Jose Scarf is the counterpart to the hood of the same name, which made you all fuzzy in winter. The scarf is very simple - the eye-catchers are the Icord cords. It is knitted with Lovely Merino Treat from Rosy Green Wool.

This sneaker sweater from Sinchens is absolutely to my taste at the moment. Dropped shoulders, slightly cropped cut, wide cuffs at the hem - everything is just right for me! Here you're working with Ecopuno from Lana Grossa (have you spotted it in the new yarns yet? 🤩) and Midnatssol from CaMaRose.

I have a cute T-shirt in my luggage with Fiorellino by Isabell Kraemer. The round yoke is decorated with a textured pattern, otherwise you work stockinette. In the knitting set you will find Morning Salutation Vegan Fino from Kremke Soul Wool.

Who wants to knit babies ...

We've also put together all the kits for the new Sandnes baby collection (the knitted pieces, not the cute models ;-)). You'll find eight cute designs - from dresses to short-sleeved bodysuits.

The sizes range from three months to four years. We knit with Mandarin Petit (cotton), Duo (new wool, cotton), Tynn Line (cotton, viscose, linen) and Alpakka Silke (alpaca, silk). The first three in particular are wonderfully uncomplicated and easy to maintain. As usual, the patterns are only available in combination with the yarn - and no longer as a booklet, but individually.

More information

Anyone who needs something to listen to while browsing through the sets for the Mother's Day shawl 2025: A new episode of our Maschenfein podcast "Nur noch eine Reihe" went online this week. The topic is of course Romy (even though we didn't reveal her name in the episode), but Marisa and I also talked about new arrivals in the store, for example. The result is just under 50 minutes of fine net talk - take a listen!

And if you have any questions that you would like us to answer in the podcast, leave us a voice message! Just call this number: 030 235 98 60 25 and you'll be taken to our voicemail where you can leave your question. Whether it's a knitting technique, yarn question or curiosity about Maschenfein - we look forward to your suggestions and will then include the question in the podcast.

Maschenfein knitting round

You can spend even more time browsing through our knitting round. I have brought a small selection with me:

Kathi is wearing the Micaela sweater by Moreca Knit from Brushlight by Cardiff. A great piece for spring and a great success!

You can see our knitted Paul Scarf at Christiane. The little shawl made of cashmere 6/28 by Pascuali is part of the shawl book, but the pattern are also available separately. I have already knitted it myself and wear it a lot (or lend it to my daughter). It's definitely worth it!

Finally, I would like to know from you: How do you like this year's Mother's Day shawl? Do you already have any color ideas? Some of the Maschenfein team are knitting it themselves this year - it just has to be done. We'll start together on April 11! But for now, I wish you a lovely weekend and lots of fun browsing and knitting!

Susan

Shawls aren't really my go-to knit project, but this one is a must-have. I love the crochet detail!
I also like the turtleneck sweater in the pictures. I thought I read something about it on the blog, but didn't find it again. Is there a tutorial for it?
LG Susan

Sophia

Dear Susan, how nice that we were able to convince you with Romy. The white sweater with turtleneck is the Stella Sweater 2308 from Sandnes: https://www.maschenfein.com/produkt/stella-sweater-2308v1-08/ The pattern are only available from Sandnes together with the yarn (this is a requirement of the manufacturer). In any case, I hope you enjoy browsing and maybe even knitting it yourself! 🙂 Best regards, Sophia

Ingrid

Hello everyone,
I think the design is beautiful this time. I especially like the crocheted one. I'm back again this time. I have ordered the silver-grey color. Thank you for your great ideas. Best team!

Miriam

Hello, I find it very beautiful, I don't like very large shawls but Romy is simply beautiful, I would definitely knit a small version. I ordered it yesterday, in natural, for work so that it matches my work clothes. I read every newsletter and listen to the Potcats, keep up the good work and the knitting list is getting longer and longer.

Love greetings

Miriam

Sophia

Dear Miriam, oh, thank you so much for your feedback and I'm delighted that you like Romy so much! I wish you lots of fun knitting! Best regards, Sophia

Sarah

Hiiiimmmel, I'm shockingly in love! The Mother's Day shawl in sage.....I'm going crazy. I'm going to neglect the fact that my needles are full and go and find the crochet hooks. 😅🍀.

Sophia

Dear Sarah, yes, I was also very taken with sage (but then decided on marble - it was hard :-D). And I'm sure you'll still find free needles! Best wishes and happy knitting! Sophia

Tina

Good morning,

what a lovely Saturday coffee with lots of knitting ideas.
When I listened to the podcast yesterday, I immediately said SETA SURI when I heard "there is a yarn from Lana Grossa that keeps coming up in the searches in the store" in (my head, fortunately) and was then quite surprised that it is Eco Puno....
As a mohair allergy sufferer, I would be delighted if you would also include Seta Suri in the store 🙂

Greetings from Hamburg,
I'm now trying to prevent the Perla Cardigan (in this weather today!) from pushing itself IMMEDIATELY into my knitting list (that would be a great project for the summer vacation...)

Tina

Sophia

Dear Tina, I'm happy to take your wish with me! 🙂 And the Perla cardigan is really great ... 😉 Best regards, Sophia

Constance

I have to admit that most scarves don't really pick me up, so I've never considered a Mother's Day shawl. With this one, I'm thinking about getting two (from Como) in the budget... 🤭 It's really beautiful!

Sophia

Dear Constance, how wonderful that we can inspire you with Romy! That's the beauty of knitting: there are sooo many designs that there is something for all tastes. I hope you have lots of fun knitting, maybe you'll needle Romy! Sophia

Barbara

Good morning, the Mother's Day shawl is beautiful.... Is there a mini version of it? Thank you for the always very successful Saturday coffee. I look forward to it every Saturday morning and my knitting list is getting longer and longer 😅 so maybe the mini version could be made.... You are a great team!!! Keep it up👍🍀
All the best
Barbara

Sophia

Dear Barbara, yes, a mini version is being planned! 🙂 As soon as there is news, I will of course tell you about it in Saturday Coffee. And I'm really pleased that you like the Saturday coffee so much! All the best to you and best wishes! Sophia

Sarah

Hello,
the scarf is very nice, but for reasons I hope you know, I personally don't like the link with Mother's Day at all. What a pity!
Best wishes and keep up the good work!
Sarah

Sophia

Dear Sarah, you are of course free to do so. First and foremost, Romy is a scarf design and Mother's Day is the hook for our campaign. Whether you celebrate Mother's Day or not is up to you 🙂 And since you also wrote that your comment was not activated: We unlock every comment by hand. Since I was traveling with my family, I didn't do it right away and also wanted to reply to your comment - hence the delay. Best wishes, have a great weekend and happy knitting! Sophia

Sarah

Ok, thanks! It was first there as "under review" and then it was completely gone, while others that had been posted at a similar time were already released. Some were released after that too, but mine wasn't. That's why I thought it was gone. I'm sorry about that.

Antje

I haven't made any Mother's Day scarves so far, but this one is a MUST. The shape reminds me of Kolding. And I love that very much. But it is completely different in execution. I've already seen a video of the dropped and re-crocheted stitches for a different knitted piece. A very exciting technique.
I ordered yesterday; Como Cashmere in cherry blossom. Having now overcome erysipelas, the shawl should and will continue to remind me to be patient and take care of myself. Perhaps I will be able to wear it on May 23rd at the latest for my eldest son's 30th birthday.
I would be interested to know why the scarf is called Romy? There was often a (family) connection with the previous scarves.

Sophia

Dear Antje, oh, cherry blossom is a great choice! <3 I hope you can knit in lots of lovely memories. Best regards! Sophia

Constance

I am immediately in love with the scarf! But I have other projects at the moment, so I'll have to postpone it until late summer....

Sophia

Dear Constance, I understand that 😀 I'm looking forward to seeing what you knit. Feel free to share it in a comment on the next "On the needles" blog post! Best regards, Sophia

Ruth

Good morning,
I think the Mother's Day shawl is wonderful! I've already ordered it :)
Best regards
Ruth

Marisa

That makes us very happy, dear Ruth! And have fun with it already, best regards
