{Saturday Coffee & Net Talk}
In the Maschenfein universe, there's probably one thing that makes you realize that the end of the year is in sight. Okay, two, if you include the slight panic about whether you'll really manage to finish the Christmas sweater, plus three Santa stockings, the pair of cuffs and the cute little candy canes before Christmas Eve.
But what I mean - and it's by far the nicer, more tingly point - is that this year's Christmas shawl is online. In this Saturday Coffee I'll tell you more about Stola Elli, yarn combination, construction method, knit-along and co. So make yourselves comfortable, get some coffee and cookies and have fun reading! I promise you: it will be lovely!
Elli is our sixth Christmas shawl
It's crazy how time flies. Or rather, how it races by. We had to count it ourselves in disbelief, but it's true: The Elli stole is already our sixth Christmas shawl! The name was not chosen without reason - this year's Mother's Day shawl Lotti was named after Marisa's grandmother on her mother's side, while Elli represents her father's side. It always touches me when the names of designs are not chosen at random, but have their own story.
The design development of the scarf began back in the summer at our team meeting in the Mecklenburg Lake District. In addition to the basic structure and a pattern idea, we also decided on the yarns at that time.
Two yarns make a dream combination
In keeping with tradition for the Christmas shawls, a yarn from Lamana is also featured this time: Como is - as you probably already know - a pure merino yarn and belongs to the "Superlight family". Despite its considerable meterage (120 meters per 25 grams), it is light and fluffs up wonderfully after bathing.
This year, it is complemented by a new addition: Brushlight from Cardiff Cashmere is a soft, brushed yarn made from cashmere and silk. It is a little fuller than normal brushed yarns - which is just perfect in this case. I need hardly to add that it is particularly luxurious.
The construction of the Elli stole
As always with our Christmas shawls, this time there is a special technique at the forefront. To be honest, there is no clever plan behind it, but it has actually happened by chance every year that we have focused on a particular knitting technique.
While Margareta's Mama had slip stitches up her sleeve, for example, Lucia was all about crossed stitches and Ruby was all about stitching deeper. Elli 's eye-catcher is clearly the beautiful lace pattern, which is framed by a ribbed pattern in cozy merino. This also makes knitting more challenging, as you work with several balls of yarn within a row.
Increases within the border cause the stole to grow to its full width in the first half, before decreases in the second half reduce it back to its original dimensions. You knit the stole from one end to the other and in one piece. In doing so, you work the rib part surrounding the lace section directly. After washing and blocking, the final measurements are approx. 220 to 230 cm long and approx. 50 cm wide.
Due to the construction and knitting method, we also give the Elli stole an advanced level of difficulty. But we wouldn't be Maschenfein if Lisa, who has been more than active in helping us with the design development, hadn't provided lots of help. The help charts are particularly great, listing exactly when which pattern row and which increase or decrease is due - very convenient for crossing off. You really won't get confused, I promise!
The knit-along for the Christmas shawl
And of course we want to knit together with you again this year! While the first Christmas shawls were intended as a gift to yourselves, your desire for virtual knitting together was so great that we decided to organize the Christmas shawl in the same way as the Mother's Day shawl.
So if you buy the knitting kit or the individual pattern now, you will initially only receive the cover sheet, the material specifications and all the information about the knitting method. So you can already browse for colors or, of course, make the gauge. At the start of the Knit-Along on Friday, November 15th, you will receive the update of the pattern via your customer account or via Ravelry. Please be patient at this point. Experience has shown that many customers receive an update on this day, so it may take a while. However, everyone should be able to download their complete pattern in the course of the morning.
From then on, it's time to knit! Sweeten up the gloomy November or take some time out during the naturally rather hectic Advent season and knit the Elli stole. If you are on Instagram and Facebook, you are welcome to show your knitting progress. So that we can see your pictures and also show them here, please mark "@maschenfein" in the picture so that I can find you. I look forward to many, many photos!
What else happened
As you can see, this week we were all about "Christmas shawl". And yet more great new items have been added to the store - as always, we want you to have the full choice!
This slipover from Knitting for Olive is ideal for anyone who still wants to knit Christmas items for children (my optimistic and, as always, knitting-list-confident me wants to do the same). The model complements the snow design series and has no sleeves.
Merino and Soft Silk Mohair are knitted from the bottom up. Snow and trees are knitted on the body using the fair isle method. The brims are worked in a rib pattern.
Christmas sweater for tall people
Of course, I would also like to knit a Christmas sweater for myself. Of course, it's already November, but ... what would the world be without a bold drive?
In the course of the whole Christmas sweater release flurry, I was particularly taken with this model here: Northern Augustins No 6 by Anne-Sophie Velling exudes just the right mix for me. Not too much Christmas vibes, but still clearly Christmassy. I would use the same color combination for this top-down knit. And the yarns from Krea Deluxe - in this case Organic Wool and Deluxe Silk Mohair - inspire me anyway.
A sweet gift for Christmas
The new mug from Minuk also arrived at the warehouse this week. It immediately made me twitch - I simply have a thing for special coffee mugs. And when there's a lot of chaos, some stitching just feels good - we all know that!
The mug has a capacity of approx. 250 ml and the print is a dishwasher-safe screen print. So if you want to make yourself or a knitter friend happy, this mug is a very good choice!
Maschenfein knitting round and a newsletter request
Finally, I have a small request for you: In your newsletter settings, you can enter your birthday in addition to your preferences as to which newsletters you would like to receive. Some of you have already done this, but perhaps one or two of you would still like to fill it in. We have prepared something for you. Or: Who doesn't enjoy a little surprise on their special day? You can find the settings if you scroll to the bottom of a Maschenfein newsletter and click on "Email preferences".
And whether it's a birthday, Christmas or "just because": every knitter is happy to receive beautiful accessories - after all, you knit with your eyes! So take a look at Ruehrfee's photo: she shows you a practical needle case from Minuk and a project bag from Mien Berlin. I have already given the former as a gift myself (it was very well received!), the latter I own myself (and love it very much!). You can find even more gift ideas for knitting enthusiasts in this inspiration.
At Rosi' s you can discover the finished, maschenfein Dina Sweater. This is also a knitted piece for the whole year! As in the original, Rosi knitted it with Kosho and Sensai from Ito. If you want to find out more about the sweater, you can take a look at our YouTube-Video.
We'd love to hear what you think of our Maschenfein Christmas shawl. Are you knitting along? Or are you occupying your needles with another exciting knitting project? Let me know in the comments. Have a wonderful weekend with lots of knitting and browsing time!

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.
I really like the Christmas shawl.
The comment about the mug fits perfectly (for me).
I have a question about my project:
Could I also knit a hoodie from the combination of Lamana Como and Cardiff Brushlight? Nice and cozy and warm, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?
I would be very pleased to receive your feedback.
Have a great week and enjoy knitting.
Dear Betty, sorry, your comment has now slipped too far back. In principle, you can also knit the combination for sweaters - the knit will certainly be nice and warm and not too heavy. But it's difficult for me to say whether it's really suitable for "outdoor" use. Pure new wool yarns are more suitable for this, perhaps even knitted into a Fair Isle model. By weaving the yarns together, your knitted piece will achieve a nice density that keeps you warm. It's a question of personal preference and of course you can wear a sweater made from Como and Brushlight outside, but it won't keep out wind and water (like the Norwegian sweaters do). If you have any further questions, please send an email to support@maschenfein.de - we'll be happy to help! Best regards, Sophia
My knitting list is soooo long, but maybe I'll have to order the beautiful Christmas shawl in dark brown tones after all...!
So the Christmas shawl is great. Unfortunately I can't order it in the USA, and that leaves me 2 weeks to knit it (I'm coming to Germany on 12/12)! The sweaters and cardigans in the photos are just as great! I particularly like the blue sweater with the blue scarf.
Hello everyone
Can you tell me the name of the gray cardigan in the picture "Construction Elli"? It is simple but beautiful!
Thank you for your help.
Best regards
Daniela
This is our new Brevue Cardigan! It will be released here soon! ❤️
I'm spontaneously in love with the Christmas shawl, it's gorgeous! I won't be able to make it for my big family before Christmas, but winter is still a long way off.
I am blown away by your new Christmas shawl 🤩
I think the idea of combining two yarns like this is simply brilliant 🤗
I'm looking forward to the Christmas shawl. I've just ordered it in white, which is just in time, because my white (gray) stole - not made of wool - is getting a bit grotty and urgently needs to be replaced. I hope I can finish the project by Christmas, it's simply beautiful and elegant.
Dear Maschenfein team,
The Christmas shawl is beautiful, I really must knit it for myself and give it as a gift! I am an absolute shawl, scarf, stole..... fan and am so happy that a dear friend told me about you years ago. I also always have different projects on the needles, so I can choose between just relaxing or patterns or... depending on my mood. But I just can't do without knitting
All the best from Doris
Elli is adorable. I'm not sure about the Christmas sweater 🤔 maybe it's a bit over the top
Great Christmas shawl 😍. I'm in, just have a question about the color combination. What goes best with caramel? Could Sudan be a good match?
Best wishes and have a nice weekend 🙋♀️
Unfortunately, I can't find where I can enter my date of birth or where I can manage my newsletters.
I get them all 😍
Hi, have to look in the email at the bottom! I was looking too!
Simply go to one of your newsletters and scroll to the bottom, there you will find the preferences, just click on them and change them
Hello Anne, you can do this in the email you receive. Right at the bottom. LG, Aette.
