The same applies to vests: "If it doesn't have sleeves, it doesn't count as a project". So you can hop a vest or two straight onto the needles! And if you like sweaters, you'll love vests!

The most important facts about knitted vests

Are you one of those knitters who don't like spending time on "Sleeve Island"? Then embroidered vests are a welcome change for you! Because with a vest, you're basically knitting a cardigan without sleeves. Very briefly summarized 😉

Of course, it's not quite that simple. Simply knitting a cardigan according to the pattern without sleeves will not work in the vast majority of cases. The constructions are simply different. Fortunately, there are plenty of knitwear designers who have created wonderful cardigans that you can easily knit yourself.

At Maschenfein, Jule has put the Franzi vest on paper - together with our cooperation partner Franziska Klee, the Leipzig label for sustainable leather bags. Founder Franzi often wears a vest knitted by her mother in her Instagram reels. She knitted the simple design in garter stitch freestyle for her daughter and shared her notes with Jule. You can therefore get the pattern from us for free. Either as a set or on their own.

Vest or vest? The main thing is knit!

But don't be surprised if you search for knitted vests on Ravelry, for example. The English word "vest" doesn't just refer to what we call a vest in German. According to the Duden dictionary, it is a "sleeveless garment reaching to the waist, usually buttoned through the front [single-breasted] and worn [close-fitting] over a shirt or blouse". In English, on the other hand, the term "vest" covers all sleeveless garments. Therefore, if you search for "vest", you will also find designs that we know as pullovers in German.
If you filter for vest knitting kits at Maschenfein, you will only find designs that correspond to the German definition.

How do I find the right knitted vest?

Knitted vests are available in many styles - from the cozy "grandpa vest" to the trendy cropped look, everything is included. To find the right style for you, think about what occasion you want to wear your vest for. Also think about whether you want to wear it open or closed. And do you already know what you want to wear under your new favorite piece? This will bring you closer to the right cut of vest for you. And then go and browse. Take a look at the pictures of the designs and let them inspire you.

Trends in the Maschenfein team

If you ask the Maschenfein team about their preferences for knitted vests, you get a wide variety of answers. Jule and Mirjam are already right in the middle of the trend and love their Franzi vest dearly. Chris and Sophia are slowly venturing into the world of vests with the Manhatan top from Cocoamourknitwear and the Sonja vest from Lamana. Don't worry, these styles can also be worn open. That's exactly what we love about the vest trend: worn closed, they are a great substitute for tops and open, they brighten up any outfit. Sandra, on the other hand, isn't quite on board with the trend just yet: "I haven't landed on vests yet. Ask me again in two years' time when the trend is over. Then I'm sure I'll be on fire."
Tastes differ and that's a good thing!
