When winter blows cold and wet around our ears, we really feel like knitting hats again. Here you can find out how to start knitting hats so that even beginners can try their hand at knitting. In addition to lots of pattern inspiration, we have also provided you with a free chart in which you can find hat sizes for the smallest and the largest heads. Have fun reading and browsing!

Maschenfein has the right model for every taste - whether it's a slip-on or bobble hat, simple stockinette or more sophisticated with a cable pattern or Fair Isle. With the help of our knitting kits, you will find the right model with the right amount of wool for your size and, of course, in your favorite color.

But let's start from the beginning:
The most important techniques you should master to knit a hat are knitting in the round and knitting decreases. You cast on the desired number of stitches and then do NOT turn the work, but join it in the round. It is best to place a stitch marker at this point to indicate the start of the round. Now work your way through the pattern round by round and complete the piece by decreasing the size of the round until there are only enough stitches left to be sewn together.

You can find all the information about "Knitting in the round" in our knitting knowledge. Have a browse!

Which knitted hat suits me?

Ribbed cap

There are classic hats that are suitable for everyone. They are particularly popular in a ribbed pattern.

Bobble hat

A variation on the classic (ribbed) hat is the bobble hat, which is particularly cute for children. But adults can also wear them stylishly - for example with these great vegan fur bobbles.

Beanie

A casual beanie hat is good for beginners, as it is perfectly ok, if not desirable, for this model to be a little looser. So don't worry if your yarn tension is not quite where you would like it to be.

Absolutely on trend

Balaclavas and hoods!

Balaclavas and hoods have been particularly popular for some time now. One is reminiscent of the slouchy hats from childhood and the other refers to a scarf (collar) with an integrated hood that can be pulled up if required or simply left hanging like the hood of a hoodie.

Design your own knitted hats with a little practice

If you have already knitted one or two hats yourself, you might be thinking: "I have another idea. But what's the best way to realize it?" Then we have something really great for you! In our free hat chart, you can read off the required sizes for the circumference and height of the hat and then compare this with your gauge to design your own hat model.

Crocheted hats

Even though we mostly talk about knitting here, you can of course also crochet your hat. We have created three new designs for your inspiration:

Wool and needles - that's all you need to knit a hat.

The right needles

As mentioned above, hats are knitted in small rounds. Not quite as small as the rounds used for socks, but still too small for long circular needles - or is it?

No, don't worry, you can also knit hats on long circular needles. You can use the so-called "magic loop" method. To do this, divide the stitches on the long cable into two halves. You only knit one half at a time, then move the stitches on the cable and then knit the second half.

If this is too tedious for you, you can either use a set of needles or the matching short circular needles, such as our popular Chiaogoo Knit Red needles.

No matter what type of needle you are, you can of course also find the right needles in all sizes in our store.

What else do you need?

"Need" is of course always relative. With the right needles, suitable wool and the desired pattern, you're ready to go.

But what usually still helps are stitch markers to keep track. They come in all imaginable shapes and sizes.

Once you have finally cast off your hat, you should wash it, carefully pull it into shape and leave it to dry flat. You can also find suitable detergents for all yarns in the accessories.

We show you exactly how to wash your hats in a separate YouTube tutorial. Here Sandra uses a special method of stretching: on a balloon.
